Supreme Court Battle
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation has been delayed following a request from Arizona GOP senator Jeff Flake for a one-week FBI investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh testified on Thursday last week.
Flakes says his efforts were to protect the sanctity of the confirmation process, according to Vox. His reasoning has been cited from the late Senator John McCain, who often advocated for bipartisanship.
Four Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary committee walked out during a hearing scheduled Friday, including Senators Kamala Harris of California, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.
Harris tweeted that the hearing is quote a “sham and Dr. Ford and the American people deserve better.”
US-China Trade Friction
China’s top government diplomat Wang Yi says that there was quote “no cause for panic” over trade friction between the country and the U.S., according to Reuters.
Wang says China would not be blackmailed or pressured over trade in a Friday speech at the UN General Assembly.
He says quote “Protectionism will only hurt oneself, and unilateral moves will bring damage to all.”
Stereotypical Casting of Nagini?
The film “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” came under fire this week over its casting of Claudia Kim as Nagini.
Critics say her role as a snake who is a pet and servant to the villain Voldermort draws on stereotypes of the Asian “dragon lady” and that Asian women are submissive.
Expensive Rent in Westwood, Calif.
Rentcafe.com rated Westwood as the most expensive area for renters in California, with the average apartment for rent at just over $4,800. The city sits next to UCLA and west of LA County. Manhattan in New York – with the average rent just over $5,600 – holds the nation’s highest average.
